Most of us are probably guilty of sticking to the same perfume for many years – after all, if you find a scent you really love, why change it? However, as the days get warmer and a new season begins, it’s nice to treat yourself to a brand new fragrance – something a little lighter and fresher, which conjures up memories of soaking up the sun on the beach or exploring a brand new city in the sunshine – and works equally well when you’re actually doing those things!
Look no further than our collection of new fragrances from iconic names including DKNY, Calvin Klein and Issey Miyake. These classic scents have been reinvented for summer, so they will be the perfect companion in your suitcase whether you’re holidaying in Sicily or Seattle.
Here are our picks of the five best new perfumes for summer, or you can check out the best summer fragrances for men and women if you fancy trying something completely new.
What type of fragrance should I go for in the summer?
If you’ve ever wondered why your favourite fragrance smells more intense in the summer, it’s because heat amplifies scent. So, when the weather gets warmer it’s advisable to put away the heavier, muskier perfumes that work so well in the winter months, and go for a scent that contains lighter notes such as citrus or floral notes. Luckily for you, many perfume brands have summer versions of their most iconic scents, so you can enjoy a lighter version of your favourite scent when the weather is hot.
How should I store my fragrance in the heat?
Heat can affect fragrance as it breaks down the chemical bonds that give the perfume its scent, so it’s important to keep perfumes out of both sunlight and heat, for example away from windowsills and radiators. Direct heat can potentially degrade the fragrance and warp perfume bottles, so it’s best to keep your scent in the box it came in, or somewhere a little darker and cooler. Saying that, if the fragrance is packaged in a dark or opaque bottle, it should last longer and can be left out, as the dark packaging will protect the fragrance from the sunlight.
How can I make my fragrance last longer in the summer?
In hot weather it can seem like your fragrance has faded before you even leave your house, but there are ways you can make your perfume last. Firstly, apply to the pulse points (your neck and wrist) as you are less likely to sweat here. ‘Doubling up’ on fragrance is also recommended, which means using a scented body lotion that matches your perfume. This works because the oils in the lotion will ‘trap’ the fragrance, helping it last much longer, but it also has another benefit - hydrated skin is also said to be the best foundation for a long-lasting scent, so using a body lotion will help to keep your skin super-soft.
What's the difference between eau de toilette and eau de parfum?
With different names for men’s fragrances, it can get confusing to know what you should actually be looking for. So, what’s the difference? Well, an eau de parfum is the strongest option, containing between eight and 15 per cent perfume oil and hopefully lasting you all day, whereas an eau de toilette only contains about four to eight per cent perfume. It’s not as strong, but it should still last you around six to eight hours. Be aware that due to the high concentration of perfume in both, you shouldn’t apply either straight after shaving – stick to aftershave for that.
